Overview:In canon, at least in the localisation,
a possible interpretation is Yu = emptiness (which, in other parts of the game, is emphasised as
not a bad thing in and of itself), Namatame = (unfounded, desperate) hope and Adachi = despair (gives up on society rather than trying to function in it).
What do we get if we switch Namatame out for an
actual outsider? Not necessarily an Izanagi AU, but in this case: yes!
Rough timeline:From Oct 2010 through late July? 2011: Yosuke-centric, blurred-details overview
here.
Startgame
- Handshake aside,
close to canon up until swords in a food court, though the undercurrents start to change already.
- Attacked by Shadows first time in the TV, with Chie present.
- Chie also present for the twisted shopping district; Yosuke's Shadow
not present (duh), so they don't find out what the deal is with those for a little while longer.
- Obviously Yosuke doesn't kidnap Yukiko right after she's on the Midnight Channel. Or at all.
- Eventually, she stops appearing... Does that mean Yukiko-san is safe? Well... who knows? (With maybe some nudging from Adachi saying hey, can't be too careful...)
- So he carries on lurking around her. (unsure)
Yukiko's Castle
- later than canon, early/mid May: Altercation in the electronics dept about Yosuke being
kind of a stalker lately makes him lose his temper a bit and pull Yukiko into the TV. Whoooops.
- He tries to get her to stick by him, but now she's really rattled and runs off into the fog. Double whoooops.
- Chie and Yu show up then on his tail, neither of them particularly happy but Chie especially livid. Teddie also pops up, because of the noise. Better go after her! All together; Chie is in fact cross enough to want to ditch Yosuke, but she can't really stop him from running after them.
- Shadow selves make their first appearance in the courtyard. It's dramatic! Because now they can finally see
how being pushed in a TV might kill someone. But they don't necessarily know the thing about foggy nights yet.
- So a Persona looks like the monster it came from - why do Yu's and Yosuke's look so similar, then? Again, casts suspicion on Yu. It's a lead of a kind all the same; they might be looking for someone who had a Persona already...
- Yosuke suggests they pull out and think about what to do now that they've got a better appreciation of the danger Yukiko is in; Chie summarily boots him in the face (figuratively, for once) and carries on, because Yukikoooo.
- So they're weaker, and Shadow Yukiko is a tougher fight. Chie injured, because tired out earlier??
Aftermath
- They're still not a team, and now things are even more strained, although Yosuke apologises awkwardly to Yukiko at some point.
- mid May: Yosuke does not pay much attention to biker gangs or kids rumoured to be in them, and sees pretty much just fuzz when it's Kanji's turn to go on the Midnight Channel. Since fuzziness isn't interesting, he doesn't investigate. It's all about rescuing
girls, duh :V
- No formalised IT → little progress, no regular meetups → boring. :(
- By now police investigation winding down due to lack of progress on their end too (this is after all around the point they send in Naoto), so Adachi has more time to slack off around Junes and elsewhere. SOCIAL LINK, GO (only to be horribly broken later)
- Perhaps Yosuke gets the idea to push it past L1 - Adachi acting all friendly and gullible, "manipulation" being one keyword associated with the Magician, he thinks of "planting" the idea that Yukiko and Chie turning up somewhere injured is linked to the last couple murders, to get the police at least looking in the right direction, maybe... But c'mon, it's not very believable even without Yosuke's chronic foot in mouth. Adachi strings him along a bit, but not that far.
- Meanwhile, also with probable nudging from Adachi, trust in Yu tanks.
- Rise comes to Inaba, and is on the Midnight Channel - yeeeah, that sure is someone Yosuke does recognise. He goes to her by himself with the excuse of warning her and is awkward at her - tries to warn her away from Yu without actually
saying he's warning her away from Yu, he just ends up looking weird. But she finds him funny and appreciates being talked to "normally", so friendship of a kind. (Does the proper senpai squad ever go to her? Yu seems like he wouldn't without prompting?)
- Nothing happens to Rise (after Yukiko, Yosuke is happier to keep stuff vague), and no dungeon / great revelation means she continues to "seem tired", but she settles into school reasonably well and picks up a few friends because she's not a horrible person. Remains friendly with Yosuke, but not to a ~special~ extent. Which might annoy him.
Void Quest
- Mitsuo still does his copycat killing, because none of that was ever Namatame. This is the
first time a picture has been clear on the Midnight Channel, which backs up the presumption that there really is something different about this guy / he could really be the killer.
- Also the first time they must go look for a ~clue~ - no Rise, just Teddie's washed-up nose, so need more than just his name - that he's a loner?. They're all off on their own; Yosuke is already in a position to hear a lot of gossip, and then Adachi "accidentally" blabs some more...
- He's the first to deliver a clue, and he's sick of all the inertia, so he hares off rather than head back out and alert Yu and co.
- But they haven't been organised, and they haven't been level grinding! So the dungeon sort of wipes the floor with him. Yu, Chie and Yukiko show up all together, doing somewhat better for there being three of them, and have to bail him out. Or rather Yu decides that they'll bail him out, because this isn't the first time Yosuke has pulled some bullshit and the girls are getting a bit tired of it. They consider ditching him at the entrance, but then they'd have to slog back through, and they don't know about the foggy days being their real time limit...
- Shadow Mitsuo also a challenge, but working together they just about pull through, though Yosuke (having been weakened already) is the most drained. No anime shenanigans. Nothing stopping them turning a passed-out Mitsuo in...
- ...Except Yosuke. Because it can't be over, right? Dude kept frothing all the way through the dungeon, he's obviously crazy, his Shadow just vanished, there must be more to it. And more importantly, if it ends here, so does Yosuke's specialness, without him ever having accomplished anything and with Yu basically taking the spotlight right at the finish. He has a lot of feelings! Too many feelings than are a good idea to wave around in the TV for any length of time, in fact...
- So,
suddenly giant frog (because Kunino-sagiri's appearance originally
seemed to be Namatame's Shadow...)
- He actually takes out Yu, who wildcard or not hasn't been level grinding either, but gets overpowered by Chie and Yukiko in tandem. The Shadows disperse with no Shadow self appearing, and everyone is very confused.
- No further fighting mainly because
everyone is at their limit.
Aftermath
- Yeah, at this point none of them are getting along at all. Nobody believes Yosuke killed Saki, because that would be sick, but otherwise they're wondering about him because he's been hella suspicious for some time. On the other side of things, the seeds of doubt where Yu is concerned have been planted.
- Yosuke had no inkling of anything else lurking inside his head, so he's just slightly terrified, and that does nothing for his existing fear of self-examination. He pushes himself to push it all on Yu.
- ... But Yu wants to remain friends with everyone, because Yu. Awkward times ensue.
- Adachi probably finds that hilarious.
Secret Base
- August: Meanwhile, Mitsuo has been turned in, so Naoto is out of a case. She has not noticed the dumb kids hanging around in a big group, because they haven't been hanging around in any kind of group; she has, however, noticed the pattern of them popping up one after the other around the same places as the police get leads. She therefore goes to talk to them one after the other.
- She doesn't believe the case is over, and Yosuke refuses to believe the case is over - teamwork!!
- Except she won't believe the details just from hearing them, so he offers to take her into the TV. It's sort of establishing for himself that he's still got it - screwed up with Yukiko, didn't go far enough with Rise, but
hey Naoto is a dude (as far as he knows), it's different, this time it'll be different...
- The next time he attempts to summon Izanagi is... different. Kunino-sagiri defeated but internal conflict means summoning is more difficult - fails once? Which would put Naoto in danger D:
- (stupid idea: what if he got eaten by Shadows again \o/)
( DRAFT )later:
- Yu is a weirder guy than he appears, of course completely innocent, and social linking with other folks all the while even if he doesn't necessarily have party members to speak of any more... but Yosuke doesn't know that. Drama! (sort of deconstruct his more oddball actions?)
- He might even social link a bit with Yosuke during off time before shit really goes down; under other circumstances they
would basically be married get along very well, since their personalities are right for it. Cf Adachi and the canon Jester slink.
Conflict!- As well as the guys, Chie and Yukiko have agency - how's
their investigation going? (In fact they even have agency by themselves - say, Yukiko forgives Yosuke for actions early on up to a point, but she's still less close to him at the start and so less inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt later.)
- Do they ever close in on Adachi? Yosuke gets to know a little of Adachi's background early, and he knows the reason he first felt attached to Yu, so
if suspicion was cast on Adachi, that particular connection could even be made quicker! ...but he has to stop suspecting Yu first, which at this point
uh. Nevertheless, Adachi being Adachi, he probably will slip up sometime...
- Idea: Adachi's dungeon? Spruce up Magatsu Inaba with a hero theme! But (how) do circumstances get them there?
Text dumps- Pore over those scraps of exposition Marie drops in
Golden and other people drop elsewhere; figure out how she, Kunino-sagiri and Ameno-sagiri fit into this.
(Ameno-sagiri)
All humans... will become Shadows. And I shall descend upon the united world... as the master of order.
Both this world and yours will soon be enclosed in a fog that never lifts. It will be the peaceful world that mankind has longed for...
I... am Ameno-sagiri... One who rules the fog. One awakened by man's desires. Do what you will, but your world's erosion cannot be stopped. It is an inevitability... You played your part well, stirring up the will of the masses into madness. But that will soon come to an end... Mankind will soon become Shadows and live on in the darkness of the fog, oblivious of their reality...
I am the one that shepherds humans to their true desires. Though their hearts longed for peace, it could never be attained... So they tore down the wall between image and reality. Indeed, this is the outcome desired by mankind. And mankind's desires are my desires. That is why I decided to expand this world...
This is part of the sea of unconsciousness that exists inside human hearts. A hollow forest born from bloated desire and false imagery. Humans view things as they see fit. They wish not for truth, but rather prefer the undesirables be hidden in fog... Still, humans fear what they cannot see. That brief yearning for truth becomes a ray of light which breaks the fog and torments the Shadows...
Indeed. I have come to put you all to the test, and judge your worth.
(February 13)
...That's right. Sneaking into the human world...Sensing the will of man... My role was to inform the Sagiri what the "wish of the people" was.
That's why I'm the only one of them that looks human... Even without my memory, my body fulfilled my role. In your words, I'm a spy.
I told you already. If I don't die, then your world will disappear... Our role was more than to simply find out the wishes of man. Our true role... is to control the fog and bring that wish to fruition.
Don't you think it's strange that the fog never went away? That it lasted for months? ...The Sagiri created the fog, and I absorbed it. The fog that changes people to Shadows.
...That's right. When Ameno-sagiri was defeated, the fog covering your town was no longer needed. Then I heard a voice...and all the fog flowed into me. The fog isn't gone. Even now, it's raging inside me...
(March 20)
Hey... I remembered something about myself... I was born a long, long time ago. I was... the unconscious "wish" shared by people's minds. To protect the world of man, walk the path of man, fulfill the "wish of the world"... That was my role. But... People changed. People stopped wishing for truth and life...Or maybe they just stopped paying attention.
Eventually, the "me" that wanted to protect humanity and the "me" that wanted to fulfill humanity's wish couldn't stay as one... The desires of man had no bounds, and one day, my other half became its own existence, much larger than myself. I was left behind, with no power or memories... I became a tiny fragment, incapable of even clearing the fog without giving my own life to do so..."Kusumi-no-Okami."
The rest... you already know. Without my powers, I became a tool, manipulated by the other me...
...You already know, huh.
The cause of it all, the one who created the Midnight Channel and gave you the power to enter the TV... The real puppetmaster who tried to fill both worlds with fog, using me and the Sagiri... If you don't defeat her, the world will never be truly clear of that fog.
(Izanami)
You really are troublesome. Not only did you defeat the two Sagiri I snuck into Adachi and Namatame, but you even saved that stunted dwarf of a life.
*chuckle* It's such a foolish thing. What good is saving her life? She is but rubbish, suitable only for getting rid of that pointless fog...
I... am Izanami. Ameno-sagiri, ruler of the fog, is merely an aspect of myself that I birthed long ago. You awakened to a power I had not imagined. You defeated the two Sagiri, and the one fragment born from me. And now here you stand, face to face with me...
(Yomotsu Hirasaka)
What you saw in your dream that night was the result of your awakening to your power... Could it be fate that I now await your arrival...? *chuckle*
Despair, emptiness, and hope... Those are the three qualities by which I selected those coming from outside... You showed the most grounding of the three; I would expect nothing less. In which case... I will personally and directly test your power.
I cannot believe you're still unperturbed, even after stepping so far into my realm... One had not the eyes to see things as they were, and failed to awaken to his power... One chose to avert his eyes from the truth, and allowed evil to taint his awakened power... But this one...He has come this far, yet he still yearns for the truth...He still fights...
(Rise) It sounds like Izanami's surprised by Senpai's power... even though she's the one who awakened it. Could it be that Senpai's power went beyond her expectations...?
I did not choose three pawns in jest... It was all to ascertain what mankind wished for. I learned that man gladly favors falsehood over truth... Thus, I sought to fulfill their desires by shrouding the world in fog...
(after)
Welcome back.
Everything's finally over. You really are incredible. I'm no match for you...
You just fought the "other me" that split from my personality. The two Sagiri, the other me, and the me that is speaking with you right now...They were all originally one within me. But... There was nothing I could have done, without my powers. If not for you, I would have disappeared along with the fog when the Hollow Forest vanished.
...Thank you so much. You saved everything. I'll be all right... The fragments you defeated have returned to me, and will soon become one.
My name is... "Izanami-no-Mikoto." The fertile will that protects those who live in this land and fulfills their wishes... I will not forget you.
- Other text dumps:
Namatame: Since I had nothing better to do, I sat down blankly in front of the TV and watched my own reflection... And all of a sudden, there was Mayumi. The Mayumi inside the TV looked as if she was calling to me for help... When I reached out unthinkingly to touch her... I was so shocked that I lost my balance and nearly fell face-first into the TV. I was so scared... I couldn't understand what just happened. I thought maybe I'd gone insane. In the end, I decided to think of it as just a dream, and I went back to the city the next day after finishing work.
Adachi: It was an accident. She started struggling...What else was I supposed to do?
Adachi: Sh-She fell in... Ha... hahaha... Wow... So people can go completely inside...
Adachi: I learned about the Midnight Channel through some rumor. You hear a lot of fishy stories like that on the force. But it was pure coincidence that I touched the screen and discovered my power. I burst out laughing when I found out. I knew right away that this was going to be interesting!
Other things that should change (to be folded nicely into timeline later, maybe):- The IT as it exists in canon? Nope, because guess whose idea that was? The others do pursue the case since they've heard about it and can't just leave it alone, but not nearly so organised, not so many team meetings, not even a special headquarters... And the main drivers of this are now Yu and Chie, but the latter is not quite as much of an ideas person as Yosuke is.
- possibility: ending up with
two teams, at odds?
- possibly focus on Chie
especially - she's now the first to undergo the whole "you're not me" thing, might end up closer to Yu in particular?
Personality:A personality section on an app.- First key thing: never had to face himself. The issues leading to and stemming from giant frog times? Still there, still bubbling, and he won't admit them without a struggle.
- In fact, even as he goes sailing down the slippery slope he'll remain reluctant to admit
any of it without a struggle.
you can't be me, you son of a bitch- One notable consequence is he has no reason to get close to Yu in a hurry.
- It's not like they would be at each other's throats or anything
right away - he is seen to empathise with later transfer students anyway. With nudging, however...
- Singled out as the plot demands, his hangups about isolation are dragged further into the spotlight, spurring him into doing increasingly stupid things to drown it out.
- He ultimately views it all as a show, so his regular canon attitudes towards less serious shit can actually be transferred to stuff that
should be serious - the desperation, the assumptions, the dumb ideas, all of it.
- But though parallels with villains may be brought out, he isn't
exactly the same. Still a better person than any of them, even - deep down.
- Must have been
chosen for hope (a purer hope than Namatame's), which means this has to be an underlying thing throughout everything. In canon he does once or twice get caught up in his own assumptions and at other times his lines suggest a little bit of an absolutist morality, both of which dovetail pretty well into that.
- This AU is a bit sad and he will be more ambiguous if not outright darker, but
really don't forget he's still a twit.
Other stuff:-
dual-wielding Izanagi frig yeah
- Is he a wildcard? Contrary to the username, I want to say no because Adachi doesn't seem to be.
- Arcana: the same? Fool? Jester? Let's go with the same for now.
